Smithsonian Rotunda Dining Table

The Rotunda Dining Table (from the Latin rotundus, meaning “round”) was inspired by an early 20th century pedestal extension table made in Brooklyn, New York. Tables with expanding frames that could accommodate loose leaves grew in popularity in the 19th century and were used primarily for dining. This handsome round dining table has an added table leaf that allows it to expand from a 58-inch round to an 82-inch oblong size. In a pie-shaped design pattern, the table top is made of highly figured pin knotty cherry veneers with a Castle Brick finish that rests on a robust pedestal base carved with a beautiful pattern of swirling acanthus leaves.

Smithsonian Legacy Sleigh Bed

The Legacy Sleigh Bed is inspired by an illustration found in the Cooper-Hewitt branch of the Smithsonian Institution Libraries. Known as The Doris and Henry Dreyfuss Study Center, this library contains 60,000 volumes documenting the decorative arts, including several rare 18th century furniture trade catalogs and historic home decorating periodicals. A treasure itself, the sleigh bed features 19th century Empire styling with curvaceous corner posts that join a curved headboard panel with square turned feet. A low paneled footboard with clean molding details completes the look. The bed is presented in a luxuriant figured walnut veneer in a Heritage Brown finish.

Commons Trestle Dining Table from
Smithsonian's National Heritage Collection

Evoking library tables such as those used in the original Smithsonian Institution library and adapted from an architect-designed Classical Revival library table found in the collections of the Smithsonian Institution Building, this dining table shows its splendor with a figured walnut veneer top with a white ash burl border. Finished in rich Heritage Brown, the rectangular top expands from 82 to 122 inches with two table leaves. The table base has four substantial turned and fluted Classical columns which support the top.

Diamond China Inspired by the diamond pane windows found on the Smithsonian Institution Building, the Diamond China boasts a stately arrangement of repeating diamond pane tracery on the glass doors that reflects the Gothic influences of the building. A grandly scaled breakfront deck and base with cornice molding and panel doors are presented in figured walnut veneers with a Heritage Brown finish.
