FEATURED MAKEOVER

Vibrant Basement Family Room by Toni Salazar

A Herndon client had an awkward shaped basement with an empty corner she did not know how to use. The challenging basement corner was totally ignored because of the narrow, long space that felt disconnected from the rest of the basement. One of her friends recommended Belfort’s In-Home Design services, and Toni Salazar tackled the project. Toni created a fun and playful teen space where her client’s children could gather and hang out with friends. She designed a seating area that the teens love and their parents ended up using as well.

Knowing that most of the time the kids are going to be in the basement because of the adjacent media room, Toni used a compact sectional with a small track arm that worked perfectly for the scale of the room to maximize seating. This gave the room a more contemporary look and helped bring a cooler palette that worked great with the existing wall color. She incorporated two small ottomans with storage instead of a coffee table to accommodate unexpected teenage friends to join the fun, and an open bookcase to display books and their kids' art projects. To dress the window, Toni used a Hunter Douglas roller shade for light control and layered with a custom-made cornice board to finish off the window with pops of color. To complete the room, Toni brought in accessories and pillows that added a cheerful and inviting feel this basement was desperately needing. Now one can sit with friends to chat or play a game, while others watch TV around the corner. The end result is a fun and functional room within the $6500 budget!
