Battle of the Sexes!
Have you noticed how men and women have different priorities? Of course you have. It’s the old “Men are from Mars & Women are from Venus” difference that makes the world go around! Now apply the concept to home furnishings shopping – something I am sure you all have experienced. It’s the stereotypical ‘He wants the leather recliner & the big screen TV’ and ‘She wants a color scheme, collectibles & throw pillows’.
HGTV’s host of “Designing for the Sexes”, Michael Payne, says the answer is compromise. He finds most women want color, white is fine with men. Women love collections, men look at it as clutter. Women like pattern, men like solids. Women like fabrics, men leather. Men want the big TV out in the open, women want to hide it. We can go on and on…

So, give him his leather chair, she gets the patterned sofas with lots of pillows, he gets the big TV but she hides it in an armoire. As far as her collections go, pare them down and make sure any collection is grouped rather than spread all over the room. Less clutter but more impact.
Payne guesses that the differences between the decorating styles of the sexes originate in childhood. Little girls are dressed up in patterns & bows and little boys are in khakis & neutrals. Or, is it in our genes? Either way, know your client and help them get to the best solution for them which may mean helping them reach a compromise.
